Polynesian Hula, dance, is one of the most important cultural arts of the Polynesian Islands. Through movement hula tells of the history, legends, and beauty of the islands. You don't have to be Hawaiian to dance hula - hula is for those who are Hawaiian at heart!No prior dance experience is necessary! Each lesson builds upon the one that came before it. Learn all of the hula basics, including-correct hula posture-traditional basic steps-simple choreography-dancing with hula implements-learning about The Polynesian culture and history as it relates to Dance-optional performance experience
*Private and semi-private hula classes - By Request
Beginning hula:Students will learn basic hula movements, utilizing them in learning 'auana (modern) style hulas. The class will also introduce choreography using hula implements such as pu'ilis (split bamboo rods), 'uli 'uli (feathered gourd with canna seeds inside to produce sound), and ipu heke'ole (single gourd). Information will be given on where to purchase hula implements. In keeping with hula's story telling nature, the meanings of the dances will be explained and translations of the songs will be provided. Basic Tahitian dance movements will be taught. An Otea (a dance of fast paced rhythms of the hips) will be taught ranging from simple to complicated rhythms, and movements, varying in tempo. Aparimas (Tahitian story telling dances) will also be taught.
Intermediate Hula:This class builds on the basic hula movements learned in the beginning hula class. Students who have completed 10-12 months of beginning hula and Tahitian and want to continue may take this next level of instruction. The Monday night classes follow a format that helps those students who have decided to continue instruction an opportunity to perfect their technique and learn additional repertoire. Intermediate dancer may start performances depending on individual.
Advanced Hula & Tahitian:This class is by invitation of the instructor. A certain level of perfection of these dance styles and commitment must be demonstrated. Attendance at rehearsals is a must. This is not a drop-in class.

Students will have to purchase Pareo (Hula Sarong) & I'I's (Tahitian Tassels) at $20 for each set or $10 each . Each student will need to bring both items every practice day.
Tuition Rates
Rates: $10 per class; $15 per week; $45 per month

Hula Performances:
Da Halau Ano'i Polynesia occasionally gives students the opportunity to participate in class performances. Students are not required to participate in these performances. However, if you would like to participate you will be required to purchase/utilize performance pareau/matching top and lei/hair clip (costumes are chosen by your Kumu). Attendance at rehearsals is mandatory.
The average performance includes 3-5 dancers and is about 30-60 minutes in length. The show includes dances from the Polynesian Islands, as well as an optional audience participation session so that the spectators can learn to hula. Dancers are also available to give out leis (leis included depending on package purchased) to your guests prior to the performance at an extra fee. The total fee for a show includes payment for the dancers, lei giving (if applicable), and travel expenses. Cost depends on selected program, number of dancers, duration of performance, travel, handing out of leis. Please email what you have in mind to get a price quote.
Dance Area Must be free from any glass or other sharp objects and preferably level. Must be large enough to accommodate the number of dancers at the performance. Please have dance area designated prior to dancer's arrival. Please make sure there is an electrical outlet or long extension cord available near dance area for the music unless you are providing stereo equipment. If dance area is near pool area please make sure that there is a dry spot to perform. (note: any damage caused to dancers' costumes and/or implements will be charged to client)
Change room should be as close to performance area as possible. Cannot be a restroom or washroom to which the public has regular access or a wet area.
Music
Dancers perform to songs provided on a CD or MP3. We will provide our own equipment.

Clients will receive a quote for the show via phone or email, as well as an invoice outlining total balance owed for performance. Deposit is required.
